Collaborative Discussion Post Summary
Both my initial post and the response of my peer highlight the growing challenges that society faces while deep learning and generative AI continue to develop, especially regarding authenticity, authorship, and fairness. In my initial post I discussed how the rapid advancements of image and music generation tools is making fabrication very hard to distinguish from reality, creating uncertainty and mistrust among the general public and media professionals. Thiago’s response expands on this by pointing to regulatory measures that could help maintain authenticity in this increasingly AI-driven environment.
Provenance and authenticity frameworks, such as those developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA, 2024), offer a promising way forward. Being able to verify whether an image or recording has been altered could help restore confidence in online content and communication. Artists and industry leaders agree on the urgent need for regulation. The European Commission has introduced a Template for the Public Summary of Training Content for general-purpose AI models, requiring a summary of the data used to train models, increasing accountability and traceability of AI-generated content (European Commission, 2025). This came soon after a group of European creators and industry experts demanded policymakers to ensure that AI respects creators’ rights, including consent, attribution, and fair remuneration (GESAC, 2025). These measures are particularly relevant in cases such as the previously highlighted situation of the viral imitation of Drake and The Weeknd (The Guardian, 2023).
Of course, regulation alone is not enough. As Harris et al. (2022) suggest, education and digital literacy must evolve alongside technological change. Thiago’s mention of media-literacy programmes complements my concern about how both younger and older audiences are affected by deceptive online content. The future of generative AI depends on a multi-layered approach combining technical solutions, ethical guidelines, and educational initiatives. Both transparency and literacy must progress alongside innovation if we are to enjoy the creative benefits of AI without losing sight of authenticity and integrity.
